Thailand 1950s
A young Englishman becomes infatuated with a dance-hall hostess named Vilai, who all Bangkok knows as The White Leopard. She’s no ordinary prostitute, however but an unmitigated liar and brutally transparent about her desire for money.
Reggie Joyce is the son of an Anglican vicar, and she milks him for all he is worth. Reggie knows her for what she is yet she becomes an obsession for him an obsession which as obsessions do, soon escalate in to a downward spiral of madness, ecstasy, anguish and utter disaster.
“While the Fifties was a very different world, that the more the bar scene in Bangkok changes, the more it stays the same”
Many men still do the exact same thing that Reggie does here and at the same time many women like Vilai still do the same act of enticing and fleecing men as in this novel. Or judging by the use of mirrors in the bar Vilai and women like her frequent, is this the real picture or the men using the women more?
