What you need to know before your trail

Golden Umbria is home to breathtaking scenery and great art; it is also whereHannibal and his invading band of Carthaginians ambushed and slaughtered a Roman legion, and where the local place-names still speak of that bloodshed.

A British couple, an American couple, a German, an Italian family and a few others all live along a small Italian road: there’s a whole range of characters here. It’s a black comedy of expats, locals, strangers and friends.

But apart from the people and their adventures, it’s the Italian landscape and the language that enchants

Travel Guide

Umbria

This novel depicts the lives and struggles of isolated expatriates in Umbria, and how they are exploited by Mancini, a rather cunning lawyer. The title comes from the region where Hannibal defeated the Romans and which is now prey to a different type of invasion

The streets:

“They are called strade vicinali, neighborhood roads. They are not intended to join places, only to give access to scattered houses…there are thousands of miles of them wandering over the face of rural Italy”

Palacio del Priori

The Palace of Priors – Look up at the main portal which looks out onto   the main square – the city’s symbols, the griffin of Perugia and the Imperial Guelf lion, can be seen there. Via del Priori – sadly no teashop here as in the book but there are some nice ones along Corso Pietro Vannucci at the top of the street. You really can’t miss the National Gallery in Perugia for the art – Corso Pietro Vannucci, 19, 06121 Perugia, Italy
