Love is in the air in St Carys, but you’d never know it – the people of this seaside town are very good at keeping secrets…
Clemency meets a man on the plane but by the time they land, he seems to have second thoughts. But something isn’t quite right and Clemency is left disappointed.
Ronan however is also having problems with charm – he loves a girl from afar but is too afraid to tell her
Then Clemency’s half sister Belle brings home a boyfriend and it’s the man Clemency met on the plane…
The truth has a funny way of revealing itself, and when it does St Carys will be a very different place indeed…
The author created St Carys for the novel ‘The Unpredictable Consequences of Love’ , and says she fell in love with it and so has returned to it for her latest novel. You won’t find it on any map but that’s the beauty of it – it represents everything about the towns and villages of Cornwall that the author loves so much. She’s given it a gorgeous hotel, an esplanade, quirky shops, bars and restaurants and a fabulous surfing beach.
Her inspiration for the town is St Ives, since this is the place she often holidays in and so knows well. It’s fun to do the Jill Mansell tour of St Ives imagining where these places are and who you might see as you wander on the beach.

A funny and heartwarming visit back to St Carys. The town is just full of gorgeous places to visit, shops, cafes and palm trees in the streets, an idyllic seaside getaway. There are lots of problems in this small town though as everyone buries their head in the sand – sand on the stunning surfing beaches admittedly but sand all the same.
Crossed wires and star crossed lovers drive this plot and it’s all from one fateful meeting on a plane journey where Clemency’s attempt at getting a poor man to chat with her is the funny opening to this book.
The writing is fresh and humourous and it’s always nice to see how even people who live in a calm seaside town can be like ducks on the water paddling furiously to stay afloat. The romantic entanglements were just like getting that errant deckchair set up. I did wonder if anyone would be able to sort their lives out as misunderstandings bad timing and then just no words at all stopped many a love seeing the light of day. But there is always sunshine in Cornwall – and the journey which started on that plane comes full circle.
A nice dating tip might be to drink red wine on a plane I think!
The trademark humour from Jill Mansell will always bring St Carys to life for me
