Herbert Muskie aka The Fat Man returns to his hometown of Loomis, New Zealand after 13 years living in the states.
He was bullied as a child and wants to get revenge on those who have bullied him in the past. When one day a young boy named Colin comes across him, Herbert befriends him and then starts getting the young boy in trouble. Colin’s parents think Herbert is kind and good with their son, but other people think otherwise including Colin himself.
Maurice Gee is one of New Zealand’s most distinguished novelists and was born in Whakatane.
He spent much of his childhood in the country town of Henderson which has now been swallowed up by Auckland itself and it was this town which inspired many of the settings of his books including Loomis in this one.
