What you need to know before your trail

A Place To Bury StrangersA cryptic message left next to a charred corpse in the middle of Reykjavík leaves police worried they have a gang war on their hands.

Across town Detective Grímur Karlsson investigates a missing girl from a nice suburban family and gets far too close to the truth for his own good.

It becomes clear the two cases are connected and Karlsson doggedly pursues the trail that leads from junkies on the seedy streets of Reykjavík all the way to the very top of Icelandic society.

Travel Guide

Reykjavík

This is a city on the edge – of a knife, on the edge of an icicle with tension twisting itself around your neck as you read.  A missing girl and a charred body in cases which could be linked. The snow is falling like there’s no tomorrow, and the city has frozen solid. Even the policeman has an uneasy feeling in his gut. When the opening  chapter has described a death struggle  and ended with the sentence “He was going to teach those stupid Icelanders a lesson they wouldn’t forget in a hurry, if ever” You know this is not going to be a nice sejour in the city of ice.

Perlan

Instead of the gravel paths that normally ran down the slope there were water now streams of solid ie that snaked like miniature luge tracks all the way to the bottom.

Its giant wanter tanks illuminated by powerful up-lights which made it look like a UFO

Sculpture & Shore Walk

Huge 1990 stainless-steel sculpture of a boat by Jón Gunnar Árnason, set on granite beside the sea. Shows the really chilly part of the city with the steel and the wind from the sea!

Go into the map and see the woman in the pink coat  – she could well be one of the characters looking for clues down there! Is she the one who would say “Jeg har funnet stedet hvor du begraver fremmande”  (I have found the place you bury strangers)

This is a city, a country plagued by hells angels such as  Knut Vigeland ‘The Norwegian’ and the incineration of a body in a disused industrial setting is grim, bleak and more than sets the scene for the darkness to come
