1986: A writer hears news of a massive nuclear accident at Chernobyl…
An East German writer, awaiting a call from the hospital where her brother is undergoing brain surgery, instead receives news of a massive nuclear accident at Chernobyl, one thousand miles away. In the space of a single day, in a potent, lyrical stream of thought, the narrator confronts both mortality and life and above all, the import of each moment lived-open, as Wolf reveals, to infinite analysis.
The Chernobyl nuclear disaster devastated the local town and the world in 1986. Reactor Number 4 exploded spitting out nuclear waste and radiation which was to have an effect on everyone who worked there and those who helped with the clear up for many years to come.
The novel reads like a stream of consciousness of a woman who finds out about the disaster when waiting to hear serious news about her brother’s brain surgery. This is a muddled, confusing account at time which more than portrays the nature of the disaster and the devastation which followed.
