2000s: A chilling and haunting tale which stars with a message – an SOS – found in a dogs collage in some woods. Woods where a murder took place 14 years earlier….
A message found secreted in a dog’s collar is found –
A family are trapped in their remote home and are being kept captive by two men. The men are looking for answers and revenge. This is not just a case of robbery or ransom – this is personal.
Fourteen years ago two teenage lovers were brutally murdered in a patch of remote woodland. The prime suspect confessed to the crimes and was imprisoned. Now, one family is still trying to put the memory of the killings behind them. But at their isolated hilltop house . . . the nightmare is about to return if it ever went away at all….
The book opens on a summers evening in the small town of Litton in Somerset. Picking Elderflowers in the Evening is its happy nice title. But this is a Mo Hayder book….so the landscape soon changes, as the reader descends into hell…
Litton has wooded tracts interrupted by the slash of a resevoir but a typical Mendip village which painters would enjoy portraying. And indeed there is an artistic link to William Blake and his landscapes here. The house in the book – The Turrets – seems to be inspired by descriptions and setting.
The Forest – Litton Wood?
The scene of the murders and the location of the Anchor Ferrers homes must be one of the scariest and chilling woods we’ve come across. Its the thought of what might be there that scares more than what is and at the back of the book Mo explains how an unexpected encounter with a startled deer set her on the path for recreating the dark and eerie woodland.
The greatest generator of fear is the reader’s imagination and well, if you’re anything like us, you will not want to read this near a wood or even a tree…
For the forest is the scene of a brutal and vicious murder of two teenagers. And nearby the home of a wealthy family in the present day held hostage and terrified by the unknown..
The setting is one of tension, claustrophobia and utter hell for many. Scenes of graphic violence and brutality abound. There is also a mention of intestines which is, well, make up your own mind.
Imagine your worst and darkest nightmare and then open this book and step right in.
