St Oggs
George Eliot wrote The Mill on the Floss whilst staying in the Lincolnshire village of Morton and St Oggs is based on the village.
The novel is set in and around the 1820s since there are a number of historical references to events such as events after the Napoleonic Wars but before the Reform Act of 1832. The story is also said to be largely autobiographical since George Eliot was in a lengthy relationship with a married man and suffered the same level of hostility that one of the characters in the book does.
Since the village is itself fictional, the places in it are too such as Dorlecote Mill which has been the Tulliver family home for a century.
