Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson are enjoying tea by the fire when an agitated gentleman arrives unannounced at 221b Baker Street. He begs Holmes for help, telling the unnerving story of a scar-faced man with piercing eyes who has stalked him in recent weeks.
Intrigued, Holmes and Watson find themselves swiftly drawn into a series of puzzling and sinister events, stretching from the gas-lit streets of London to the teeming criminal underworld of Boston and the mysterious ‘House of Silk’ . . .
Sherlock Holmes Museum – 221b Baker street – open the door and look inside the place where adventures begin…
This is the London of Sherlock, gothic and unapologetic..
“London was in the grp of a merciless winter, the streets so cold that the very gas lamps seemed frozen solid.
Outside, people drifted along the pavements like ghosts, with their heads bowed and their faces covered, while the growlers rattled past, their horses anxious to be home.
This is the difficult face of Victorian England – the sounds, smells, the horror, the poverty v those who had obscene wealth and a total disregard for those for those beneath them. The cesspit of the criminal underbelly is centered around the so called House of Silk – a criminal gang and a building HQ. Those who dare to go in may never come out again….alive.

I love Sherlock Holmes and so I went into this novel with an open mind. They are very big shoes to fill but Mr Horowitz is one brave man and this is a really good book – a lovely homage to the great detective himself. It’s a gripping, slow burning mystery which leads to a shocking conclusion.
It’s a clever plot and written in a very believable and Holmes like way. It’s a mystery bound within a mystery and wrapped up in a few more mysteries. A perfect book to read over Christmas beside the fire which I did – gathering clues, sippin gon mulled wine and waiting for it all to pan out. I could hear the crackling fire, the knocks on the door and see the shadows disappering into the alleys near to the House of Silk.
A brilliantly immersive read this one. I was back in Baker Street as soon as I opened the front cover.
