2000s: If you are about to rent a house…beware..
Jane stumbles on the rental opportunity of a lifetime: the chance to live in a beautiful ultra-minimalist house designed by an enigmatic architect, on condition she abides by a long list of exacting rules. After moving in, she discovers that a previous tenant, Emma, met a mysterious death there – and starts to wonder if her own story will be a re-run of the girl before. As twist after twist catches the reader off guard, Emma’s past and Jane’s present become inexorably entwined in this tense, page-turning portrayal of psychological obsession.
Many people want to live in London so competition for houses is fierce. When a house that comes on the market that sounds too good to true, it most certainly is as this novel soon shows. To be fair, with the long list of rules and the nature of the contract which follows, the interviews which take place of potential renters, this is not going to be the ideal living space for many people. Anyone really.
The rules are strict and non negotiable – no pets, no mess, no pictures etc….the list is long and impossible. The behaviour of those who live here is noted and taken into consideration, their moral standing, what they deem to be right and wrong on the moral and social scale. In the words of that TV show where you try to guess who lives in which home – matching personality to both – Who WOULD live in a house like this?
The house here is the main character of the show. The nature of air, space, comfort, synergy with its environment and how it affects those living in it and how those living in it affect the house.
