2000s: Missing women, tortured women..and one man has to find the monster
A killer lays out a body and pays detailed attention to how he arranges the scene. He takes care to leaving bits of material and a murder weapon in place for the police who will soon be on the case. To top things off, he sets the whole scene on fire.
This is the scene which Detective Inspector Luc Callanach, half French and half Scottish, is called to. Working in Edinburgh, he has recently moved from Interpol to the police in Scotland. As well as trying to fit in, he’s got his work cut out on this really macabre case.
And just when you thought things couldn’t get any more gruesome, they do. Oh boy they do.
The area of stunning vast formations, mountains, vast fields and moors. A beautiful area but one where in this novel becomes a macabre scene indeed. A fire which turns out to be a pyre. The remote and desolate location, with police having to move up from Edinburgh create a sense of unease and urgency from the very start.
Edinburgh is a city noted for its macabre history, gothic overtones and brown stone buildings but this impression of the city is hardly going to enlighten you to its nicer charms. Women are being kept in a basement, tortured in graphic detail and then he gets up and goes to work like any normal person. The contrast between the city’s nice areas and this monster in its midst makes for a terrifying read. Granton Harbour, Palmerston Place and Queen Street Gardens..seemingly no area of the city goes unnoticed. Women are disappearing from the church. This killer knows no bounds.
