2000s: What would you do if your little boy told you he wanted to be a girl?
Rosie and Penn always wanted a daughter. Four sons later, they decide to try one last time – and their beautiful little boy Claude is born. Life continues happily for this big, loving family until the day when Claude says that, when he grows up, he wants to be a girl.
As far as Rosie and Penn are concerned, bright, funny and wonderful Claude can be whoever he or she wants. But as problems begin at school and in the community, the family faces a seemingly impossible dilemma: should Claude change, or should they and Claude try to change the world?
This is a story, a poignant read regarding a child aged three deciding that he wants to be a girl and how his family deal with that, how he deals with that. This book is very timely and heart rending. An issue for many people of all ages no matter where they live in the world.
“What was clear was that they could not raise the child here. They could not raise these children here. They had to go Away. Madison was open and accepting and tolerant, yes, but tolerance was bullshit. Madison was tolerant apart from when it wasn’t.”
“Seattle was so far past tolerant that heterosexual reviewers complained they felt awkward holding hands at some brunch places..”
There are many temples in Chang Mai and statues of Buddha. The temples are there to remind visitor of Buddha and what he stands for. What appeals to Claude is that there are models of the Buddha sitting, standing, looking down and are everywhere you least expect it. Buddha looked different depending on how you looked at the figure. And sometimes he looked like a girl.
