1976/2011/2012: Just what is behind the door of 5 Peppermint Grove
Ruth Travers is leaving Ireland like so many of the Irish Diaspora who have gone before her. There’s one major difference though – this time it’s on a Boeing 777 rather than a migrant ship. The one thing that is the same however is her dream to go there and start a new life.
Her mother Angela, who lived in Perth in the seventies, is distraught when she hears that Ruth is Australia bound. It is only when Ruth discovers a sealed airmail envelope, with 5 Peppermint Grove, Perth, scrawled across it in her mother’s handwriting, that she wonders what else Angela may be hiding.
Sunshine, sandy beaches and barbeques abound but there may be more than Angela’s secret waiting for them in Peppermint Grove . .
Dublin is a city which has had its problems and which Ruth knows only too well. The economic downturn which has cast a very dark shadow over the city over the past years. There is a great problem of unemployment which is causing many people to consider leaving in search of work. Dublin is a fine city to visit though by the sounds of it as Ruth talks of Sutton Park and Clontarf – areas just outside of Dublin City.
Peppermint Grove is a nice suburb of the Perth area – not just a street. Visit the library for more local history. There’s lots of it in the area as a whole and plenty of pretty houses where there could be mysteries hiding behind any one of the closed doors.
Or what about a mysterious island? An island which was used to send naughty boys to if they played truant or got up to mischief apparently!? Rottnest Island fits the bill -it means Rat’s Nest in Dutch – a legacy from its colony days but which now give it a bit of a chilling image. And island of mystery and history and named after animals who bring vermin and death…used for boys who were naughty. And this not far from Peppermint Grove!
