Alice and Clare are sisters but more different they could not be. Alice was taken to America by her father when she was just four years old, leaving Clare with their mother.
Over the years, Clare and her mother have continually searched for Alice in the hope that they will one day be al together. Clare now works as a lawyer and has a family of her own but still lives with her own mum Marion, in their childhood home.
One day a letter arrives at the family home…. from someone claiming to be Alice.
This is sibling rivalry on a whole new level.
“Sometimes the coldest places are not in the midst of winter, when your breath puffs white, your feet are numb from the cold and your fingers stiff and frozen. Sometimes the coldest places are in the warmth of your own home, surrounded by our family.”
The village where the family live is not mentioned by name but it’s some 30 minutes from Brighton in West Sussex. Now, there is a village called Fulking and a street in it called Clappers Lane which, with a few alterations more than describe events in this novel.
