Suzanna Clarke and her husband buy a dilapidated house in the Moroccan town of Fez, and have dreams of restoring it and living in a wonderful country.
But they hadn’t bargained on the donkeys which wandered around the streets, the work that would be involved in restoring their traditional riad and the work required in getting modern day plumbing and assistance in a country which seemed to be living in its past.
How do you modernise something which is steeped in so much history?
Ever dreamed of building a house in a remote and exotic land? Restoring it and living a simple and gorgeous life?
Suzanna Clarke did too and although she had knowledge and a respect for the county and its people unlike some travellers, she is honest and not condescending when she describes her experiences and the people she meets
Such fascinating beliefs and cultural ways …lots to learn and lots of surprises to be had
Friends thought they were mad and on paper maybe they were, but then what would you do if you planned and thought about things too much? You certainly wouldn’t end up in a riad in Morocco surrounded by donkeys. And this is an experience, as Susanna takes you with her, that you will never forget.
