2000: A woman flees America looking for a new start and a clearer past in Brighton
Honor Sontag needs a fresh start after her life falls apart. So she flees her native America and heads for Brighton, England. There’s a particular reason for her choosing Brighton however – a chance to find the mother who abandoned her as a baby.
Martyn Mayfair has sworn off women with strings attached, but is irresistibly drawn to Honor, the American who keeps popping up in his life. All he wants is an uncomplicated relationship built on honesty, but Honor’s past threatens to undermine everything. Then secrets about her mother start to spill out … Honor has to make an agonising choice. Will she live up to her dutiful name and please others? Or decide to do something for herself?
“Uunable to resist the draw of the rolling ocean, Honor began the next day by strolling along the great concrete walkway called the Undercliff Walk to Rottingdean, a popular route, judging by the walkers, runners, mothers with buggies and owerners of dogs all enjoying the return of the sun, albeit by a horizontal breeze”
She takes a guide book and gets on a double decker red bus to explore the local area. Brighton and Hove she discovers is known as “London by the sea’ and is made up of Brighton and Hove and over thirty other areas including Rottingdean, Saltean and Eastingdean on its edge. But it felt like no other city, with the waves down below the cliff as they stopped and started their way along the coast road. She takes the bus to explore from outside of the White Horse pub
“Then came Brighton Marina, with twinkling rows of boats and cubed apartment buildings and beyond it shone a great white structure, projecting into the waves and bearing a huge sign ‘Brighton Pier”
Honor comes from Connecticut but this is only referred to in passing in the novel. She is from the fictional small town of Hamilton Drives up on route 7. The main action as it were is in Brighton.
