2000s: Danger ascends boundaries such as psych wards and provincial places…
Natalie King is back: back from a stay on the psych ward. She’s had a severe depressive episode and so now needs a job that is less taxing, in a place not as busy as a city – so a low-key research job at a provincial university nearby seems like the ideal solution.
However Natalie soon finds trouble and it starts with her boss Frank. His pregnant wife is an old enemy of Natalie’s. And when Frank’s tragic personal history is revealed – then reprised in the most shocking way – Natalie finds herself drawn deep into a mystery. And even deeper into danger.
Where the story starts and from here, Natalie drives her Ducati along the Great Ocean Road to the smaller town of Geelong for her new job. The destination is one thing but the journey is quite another as this town and the area around it is one of unparalleled freedom.
There’s Lorne surf beach (the only patrolled beach in town) and Loutit Bay nearby. For Natalie however all she cares about is the wind in her hair and the thrill of riding her Ducati along this stunning part of Victoria’s coast.
One of the world’s most scenic drives. Ever.
Where the university is where Natalie takes up her new job. For a wander to discover the place, a great idea is to head down to Cunningham Pier as this is one very smart harbour! Very close by, there’s a series of huge rock stacks called the 12 Apostles, that rise majestically from the Southern Ocean.
For a legal sense of the city, and to see Jacqueline Barrett’s office in the book, head to Lonsdale street where the Parliament is located.

“I want myself back…I’ve tried, but trouble attracts me, and vice versa. Honest truth? I like it that way”
This more than sums up the book for me – someone who knows they should avoid danger and stress but someone who can’t. I’ve not come across a Ducati riding Forensic Psychiatrist before and I’m not a fan of motorbikes but I could feel the wind in my hair and the thrill of the ride along that Great Ocean Road!
There ‘s not many novels which have a main character who works in the mental health field let alone having been on a psych ward herself so this was a nice twist and threw up many issues which were woven in to the plot here and probably will be in future novels.
The intrigue between Natalie, Frank and his wife kept me reading as is Natalie’s past with prosecutor on a case she’s working on. That Natalie is one Ducati riding dark horse! Frank, kept his parts of the book short and sweet mimicking his guilt? whilst Natalie’s chapters were longer and with many more threads woven in to represent her mind process and the unravelling investigation no doubt.
There were lots of red herrings, lots of pondering asI turned the pages and a mental health angle I felt really added to the mystery as well as being nicely highlighted in its own right.
