What you need to know before your trail

As the war rages on in Europe, the United States joins in the fight after the bombing of Pearl Harbor by Japanese forces. Suddenly, Japanese Canadians are considered to be “enemies,” and Amy Takashima and her family fear for their safety and freedom. Ellen cannot understand why her best friend should be punished, especially since Amy was born in Canada and her parents have been wonderful neighbours. But others in the community think that the Takashimas could be spies—which only strengthens the girls’ friendship as they cling together for comfort. What will happen to Amy and her family? Will the war separate the girls forever?

Vancouver during the war

Japantown is an old neighbourhood in Vancouver, located east of Gastown and north of Chinatown, that once had a concentration of Japanese immigrants.

The Japanese cherry trees

More than 500 cherry trees were given to Vancouver as a present from the mayors of Kobe and Yokohama, to thank the city and its people for honouring the Japanese-Canadian soldiers during WWI. The best places to see them are Stanley Park and Kitsalano Beach. The Japanese Canadian War Memorial is also located in the park.
