2000s: A very gruesome Christmas offering in Edinburgh
Every year for ten years, a young woman’s body was found in Edinburgh at Christmas time: naked, throat slit, body washed clean.
Ten years, ten women.
The final victim, Kirsty Summers, was Detective Constable Tony McLean’s fiancée. But the Christmas Killer made a mistake. In a cellar under a shop, McLean found a torture chamber and put an end to the brutal killing spree.
Twelve years later, and a fellow prisoner has just murdered the incarcerated Christmas Killer. But with the arrival of the festive season comes a body. A young woman: naked, washed, her throat cut.
Is this a copycat killer?
Was the wrong man behind bars all this time?
Or is there a more sinister, frightening explanation?
Edinburgh is usually a nice place to be at Christmas. There’s a Christmas German market set up in Princes Gardens and often in both St Andrews and Charlotte Squares selling all kinds of festive fair. But this novel shows that not all Christmas presents are wanted…
The Christmas Market is well worth a visit as the is the Hogmanay party at New Year’s.
The lovely Salisbury Crags is a nice place to wander and walk up to Arthur’s Seat and you see the entire city of Edinburgh practically and get a bird’s eye view of the James Oswald world of supernatural and ghostly goings on down below.
Now it might be a crime scene in the novel but in real life thankfully there’s only criminally good food here. So any good booktrailer worth their salt should head here and tuck into both food and book!
This is the James Oswald part of the city as it’s where the police station is fictionalized but based on the local ones there and of course McLean’s tenement flat. Where the author lived himself as a student so the nuances of what it means to live in such a building with a shared staircase and hallway are very accurate!
