What you need to know before your trail

Varg Veum’s life has descended into a self-destructive spiral of alcohol, lust, grief and blackouts.

When traces of child pornography are found on his computer, he’s accused of being part of a paedophile ring and thrown into a prison cell. There, he struggles to sift through his past to work out who is responsible for planting the material… and who is seeking the ultimate revenge.

When a chance to escape presents itself, Varg finds himself on the run in his hometown of Bergen. This time, it’s very personal indeed.

Travel Guide

From Bergen to Hordaland

When Varg Veum goes on the run and investigates small town and big city crime, you can be sure you’re going to go on a bit of a tour at the same time of some rather stunning sites. From Bergen to Os then Hordaland via one of the prettiest ferry journeys there is.

“The shortest route to Fusa was via Os and the ferry between Hatvik and Venjaneset -a trip that took around twelve minutes; just enough to stretch your legs, to to the toilet or have a quick cup of coffee ”

Fusa

Fusa fjord, if it wasn’t for the awful investigation and trouble that Varg is having to contend with, is a lovely place. “On the opposite site, I looked across at Osoyro and the stretch of cast between Solstrand and Havik, when Mount Mosnuken towered above all the other mountains. This is the town where there is  a large fishing equipment building and where there is more than something fishy in the air.

This is an area of Norway known for its marine and fish related industries –  Eikelandsosen is the centre of the region and there are islands galore to get lost in and sadly for Varg, one heck of a hunting ground.

Booktrailer Review

I do love a Varg Veum novel. The character is complex and interesting, the characterisation strong, the writing excellent and the fact that this case gets very close and targets Varg Veum himself intrigued me from the off.

It’s a tricky book to read due to the subject matter and I admit I felt uncomfortable more than I did intrigued. The old Varg Veum is there and he is desperate to learn how he got involved in this hideous case and since I felt I know Varg well from other books, I needed to know as well!

What worked well in this novel was , despite the horrific darkness, there was a real spotlight shone on how we regard the monsters who commit these crimes. Varg changes in this novel and he becomes  hardened and shocked that he could be involved in a case like this. The tables have been turned and I bet it was a challenge to really mess these characters up and thrown so much mud at them. I just hope Varg is on more comfortable ground next time.

Don Bartlett also deserves a shout out for such impeccable translation!
