The story of Babar starts in Paris
After his mother is killed by a hunter, Babar avoids capture by escaping to the city, where he is befriended by the kindly Old Lady. He becomes educated and cultured and, upon his return to the great forest, is crowned King of the Elephants
The book is based on a tale that the author, Jean de Brunhoff’s wife, Cecile, invented for their children. Babar is a young elephant whose mother is killed by a hunter. He escapes and leaves the jungle where they lived in order to move to a big city. Then he hopes to bring the benefits of civilization to his fellow elephants.
Although the city is never mentioned, it could be Paris since the author and his wife were from the city, studied there and had the idea for the stories there. There are a few place in the city worth a look and you can find Babar in every one of the bookshops too!
