1970s: An insightful account of life in Marrakech’s Medina
1970s: An insightful account of life in Marrakech’s Medina
An academic American family moves to Marrakech and tries to assimilate into the city which is one of the oldest and most traditional cities in the Islamic world. The main setting is the Medina, the oldest part of Marrakech and the daily life which goes on there, often unnoticed. Through western eyes however, it proves to be quite the eye opener..
Especially when the westerners in question are anthropologists, and both speak fluent Arabic upon their arrival
The author says that from August 1971 – August 1972, she and her husband lived with their children on Rue Tresor, a small street in the medina or traditional city of Marrakech. Rue Tresor is a real street and all the people and incidents in the book are real but she changed the names of both streets and people so that no one gets embarrassed.
Never mind, the flavour of the streets, the noises, the people, the atmosphere are what makes this journey.
