A woman named Primrose discovers a headless corpse floating in a Sussex pond but doesn’t want to tell the police as her brother has a rather unfortunate past. However is she curious about it and can’t help getting involved- well she does have Maurice the cat and Bouncer the dog to help!

Turns out her brother was the Revd Francis Oughterard  who was accused of killing one of his parishioners but then escaped the gallows. He died not long after but in memory of him, she takes care of his pets and now gets involved in even more dubious crimes..
