2000s: A big city cop heads off to Thailand where his missionary son has been killed
Retired Vancouver Police officer Sam Watson is not a religious man so when his son Jeff heads out to do missionary service in Thailand, he’s more than upset. But he could not have foreseen what tragedy it would bring – for Jeff is murdered. The mission organization wants nothing to do with the investigation and the Thai Police seem unable or unwilling to solve the crime. Sam heads off to Thailand seeking his son’s killer but also grappling with loss, culture shock and, ultimately, the meaning of his son’s short life.
The locations are all over Thailand in the various missionaries both in the countryside and the urban cities
McKitrick’s years in Thailand have clearly informed this story, for this is the Thailand that doesn’t warm to outsiders or has questions about their role in religious areas. A landscape of faiths and beliefs that might lead to an understanding
There are many missionary places in Thailand – monasteries, temples and more. Three of the most iconic temples are on the map above – Wat Arun, Wat Pho and the Emerald Buddha Temple (Wat Phra Kaew).
