For generations the Millers have lived in Miller’s Valley. Mimi Miller tells about her life with intimacy and honesty. As Mimi eavesdrops on her parents and quietly observes the people around her, she discovers more and more about the toxicity of family secrets, the dangers of gossip, the flaws of marriage, the inequalities of friendship and the risks of passion, loyalty, and love. Home, as Mimi begins to realize, can be “a place where it’s just as easy to feel lost as it is to feel content.”
Miller’s Valley is a fictional small town in rural Pennsylvania where change is inevitable but not always welcomed. It has a failing dam and for years, there’s talk of creating a reservoir and recreational area for activities such as boats and swimming.
The Miller family is just one of those who have stayed here, known here, lived here for years. They are as much part of this town as it is of them. The farm is their livelihood and their life in every sense of the word.
“Maybe everyone stays the same inside, even when their life looks nothing like what they once had, or even imagined.”
The Miller family are a community in themselves – fractured relations, a back sheep of the family, and a dark dark secret tucked away.
