2000s: Two stories converge in the mountains of South Carolina
Angel sets fire to her childhood home, but this isn’t the end-it’s the beginning. Left with nothing she escapes into the fields of tobacco, the only place she has ever felt safe.
She starts to head towards the mountains convinced there is someone or someone waiting for her.
At the same time, Hannah, the daughter of missionaries who follow the rules of a small and strict religious sect, is forced to live a separate life from her peers. Her family moves to James Island.
As these two women’s paths connect, Hannah’s past will prove to mean everything to Angel’s future
Things go missing in Carolina. That’s what Hannah would remember most about her time there. It started easy, even sweetly, with things lie words. The wasteful parts, whole syllables, disappeared around her.Charleston became Chah’stun.
The missionary world that she is used to is clean to the point of sterile. THer parents have built her a spotless world. Their devotion to God and Holiness was proven by floor-length skirts, high- collared polyester blouses and uncut hair.
Not really an island but across the river from Charleston via the James Island Expressway.
One of the characters says “Well you can’t come to James Island and not jump in the water. Least once”
There’s a party on Folly Beach too which is south of James island
There are many plantations to visit in the area – McLeod Plantation Historic Site and Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site , of which the latter is the birthplace of the Carolina colony, first settled in 1670.
