ATCOTD begins in the small town of Monta Clare. Told through the voices of two young teenage characters, Joseph (Patch) Macauley and his best friend Saint Brown, All The Colours of The Dark is the moving tale of friendship, love, hope and determination when everyone else has given up.
The location is both fictional and small – this is a character led novel but here we have two people utterly shaped, destroyed and made by the town in which they have grown up. This novel is, in a way, a travel guide of sorts – a map of Patch and Saint’s journey from their traumatic and unusual childhood to adulthood in all its colours. These are people living on their wits, on the edge of both the world, Monta Clare and their sanity.
There is a serial killer, a missing boy, secrets and lies, hopes and fears and so much more. It’s an epic read at over 600 and my only quibble is that I feel a 100 less pages or even 50 would have made an even bigger impact.
But it’s still an epic and memorable read.
