Traveling to Faro, journalist Joanna Millard hopes to escape a relationship and career which is going nowhere. Faro is an enchanting town, and the seaside views are enhanced by Nathan Emberlin, a charismatic younger man. But behind the crumbling facades of Moorish buildings, Joanna soon realizes, Faro has a seedy underbelly, and that Nathan may have an ulterior motive for seeking her company.
Joanna’s subsequent search leads her to Ian Rylands, an English expat and a novel called The Alliance. The book, by Esta Hartford, recounts an American couple’s experience in Portugal during World War II, and their entanglements with their German enemies in both personal and professional ways. Only Rylands insists the book isn’t fiction, and that Esta Hartford’s story may actually converge with that of Nathan Emberlin…
Faro was a town in constant movement with the planes overhead, the strangers milling around town and the boats puttering in and out of the harbour. The town is busy and full of promise for a girl quite literarily on the run.
“The cafe at least was still. On the way to the language school, it had the presence and quiet grace of an ancient oak rooted to its spot in the Rua Dr Francisco Gomes”
There is an air of forgotten romance to the whole place and the black and white pictures on a cafe wall. Set into wood panelling, they remind of times gone past.
This was the cocktail bar and nightspot on the Old Town wall we’d all been to the first night of the course…It would be packed on a Friday night”
Around the apartment she rents out, she wanders outside to see the soft air tinged with pink from the falling sun. Bliss!
Well at least the landscape appears so, the mystery and the underbelly which is slowly revealed not so much.
The pavements of the town are a mosaic of cobblestones – it sounds like the place of dreams.
