Inspector Montalbano was wounded in the previous novel and so is recuperating here. Sadly this means that his beloved food is off the menu but girlfriend Livia is on hand to try and take care of him. He is eating healthy food only in this episode of the Montalbano adventures so readers put your knife and fork away.
But he can’t help getting involved in police work again when a local kidnapping seems to overwhelming the force. However another officer with more experience of investigating kidnappings is also on the case.
There is something not quite right with this case from the start – the young female university student who has been taken is from a relatively poor family so ransom is not a possibility.. And there has been no ransom or message from the kidnappers as yet…
But there’s something else, something about where she was taken, and how. There is something very strange about the whole affair…
Vigata may be fictional but it is said to be inspired by Porto Empedocle where the author’s childhood home was.
As with the other Montalbano novels, the author states – ‘As is obvious, the names of …. streets, hotels etc are entirely fictitious and make no reference to reality’. What a shame.
Via Roma – a street through the town where the literary Salvo Montalbano likes to stop at his favourite Caffè Albanese – the real Albanese has changed its name to Bar Vigata. Just down the road, leaning on a lamppost, is a statue of the inspector with a full head of hair and bushy moustache!
