A charred corpse and a set of footprints in the snow lead Inspector Celcius Daly into the twilight world of people trafficking. He’s hunting for a missing woman, Lena Novak, who mysteriously disappeared one winter’s night along the Irish border, leaving in her wake the corpses of two men.
His investigation leads them deep into border country, a wild terrain of disappearing lanes and blown-up bridges, abandoned ghost-estates and thick forests – the ultimate refuge for anyone who does not want to be found.
“She knew about border country. There were wolves, bears and buried mines in the one she had left behind, those snow-covered oak and pine forests that divided her homeland from the outside world.”
It’s here that the so-called Border Brothel. She used to travel but now is holed up here. Now the forests and the empty space are her prison. This is now the border she is stuck in and the line betwen life and death
