It’s the decade before the Spanish Civil War and Barcelona is on the verge of exploding.
Pablo Vilar, a well-connected young lawyer and journalist, wants to find out exactly what;s brewing amongst the normal every day people he meets in the street so he goes out to meet them and he comes across quite a cast of characters. There’s a cabaret artist, an anarchist leader, the city’s new autocratic civil governor, and a beautiful, wealthy countess—their destinies all bound by invisible ties.
But where do all their paths lead to?
This is a book for visiting al the great restaurants and theatres of the city. Some are fictional or no longer there, but all are authentic and evoke the time, place and taste and aroma of the time. Ones to try:
A restaurant of the same name as the club they go to – the food here is very good. In the book, it’s on San Pedro Street and is a bar and club
The theatre where Vilches had enjoyed some success. This theatre, which opened for the first time in 1914, was closed for economic reasons in 2004. But it was sadly missed and luckily it came back to life in 2008 when it was taken over by the theatre group “Grup Focus”, which operates several theatres in Barcelona and other cities.
The neoclassical façade conceals Gothic gems such as the historic Great Hall, or Saló de Cent, designed by Pere Llobet and built in the 14th century.
