1969: Just what scars can you ever really hide or disguise?
Helen Tozer will never forget the very day, five years ago when her sister Alexandra was murdered on their family farm.
Detective Sergeant Cathal Breen slowly becomes possessed by the unsolved case and discovers the Tozers were never told the whole truth. Alexandra was tortured for twenty-four hours before she died. But when he tracks down the original investigating sergeant, the man goes missing. And so does Helen.
Worse is to come however for the two men connected to this case met in Kenya, during the Mau Mau uprising; and the history that Britain has turned its face from is now returning to haunt it.
In London, the biggest criminal trial in history is about to take place – that of The Kray Twins. But he can’t forget the murder of Helen’s sister and even from far away in Devon, she seems to be begging him to relook into the case. But his questions start to dig up the soil just like that on the farm.
Clues and investigations take him all around the clubs and bars of the capital the atmosphere of the sixties pervades, with its dark clouds of racism, sexism, and society’s expectations.
The three men at the heart of the investigation have links back to Kenya, during the Mau Mau uprising. There are going to be some deep soul searching into the British involvement in Kenya.
