Thea Osborne is off to the Cotswolds although it won’t exactly be a holiday but to house sit for a couple who live in a house called Brook View in the lovely village of Duntisbourne Abbots. She is not really looking forward to it though as the size and quietness of the village probably means that she is going to be somewhat bored.
Well, that soon changes as on her first night in the new house, she hears a piercing scream. Nothing to worry about in a place as nice as this? When a body is found the next morning, Thea will soon discover that there is a lot more to this place that meets the eye.
The village of Duntisbourne Abbots is very real as are the pubs and churches mentioned in the novel although everything else is made up and of course a work of fiction. What is not fiction are the descriptions of the countryside and the beautiful landscape which shines from the stage.
On her approach to Cirencester:
The countryside is one where the hues form a palette of coulour and ‘the attentions of the world’s discerning visitors provide ample confirmation’ This is the beautiful part of the world where Thea is to spend her time. Quietly she thinks, certainly not involved in a case of murder.
But this alien territory is as first calming, full of muddy trails and babbling brooks. Dense hedges and village lanes. Intrigue round every corner. Even among the villagers themselves.
