2000s: There is both dark and deadly in Oldcastle!
The Misfit Mob is where Police Scotland dumps the officers it can’t get rid of, but wants to: the outcasts, the troublemakers, the compromised. Officers like DC Callum MacGregor, lumbered with all the boring go-nowhere cases. So when an ancient mummy turns up at the Oldcastle tip, it’s his job to find out which museum it’s been stolen from.
But then Callum uncovers links between his ancient corpse and three missing young men, and life starts to get a lot more interesting. No one expects them to succeed, but they’ve got to otherwise things could get very dark and the alternative just doesn’t bear thinking about.
Fictional and when you read this, just as well:
“Squat grey council houses scrolled past on either side of the street, lichen-flecked pantiles and hared walls, Front gardens awash with weeds. More abandoned sofas and washing machines than gnomes and bird tables.”
The village/town is somewhere in Aberdeenshire though and with a small town called Old Meldrum being just inland with a similar name, this is going on the map. There are some lovely places to see in and around Aberdeenshire so don’t let this book put you off – just be sure to take it with you on a sunny day as it will more than cast a few shadows on the landscape!
It’s grim here mind – The so-called Misfit Mob have to work in cramped, grey, damp conditions in a place where it always seems to be raining. The atmosphere is grim – the casts off on the police are here after all and they’re not happy. Sent up from Aberdeen where they see the real police work as being. The Scottish backwaters such as Oldcastle are neglected, grey and uneventful – well not for the criminals/
