2000s: Granda, a city built on mountains and caves, has a dark secret in its midst.
The historic city of Granada is vibrant with the spectacle of its Easter processions. However, not far away in the adjacent Alhambra hills, gypsy guitarist Paco is found dead in a Sacromonte cave.
Sub-Inspector Max Romero is brought in to investigate Paco’s death. It seems straight forward at first, but it soon becomes obvious that there’s into something altogether more sinister when Max reveals a link with a major property speculation in the beautiful Sacromonte valley below the Alhambra Palace; one that involves laundered drug money, city corruption and Opus Dei.
As Max sinks ever deeper into a political quagmire, he clashes with old foe Inspector Ernesto Navarro. He discovers that, even in vibrant Granada, amid its beauty and drama, the dead can reach out to the living.
This is the countryside of the rough rugged mountains and the cacti on the side of the hills. The Valley of Sacromonte sits beside the iconic Alhambra Palace and the twisty turning streets of the surrounding area.
When he looks at the Abbey of Sacromonte, the Abadia, Paco thinks of who the would like to walk as a penitente in the Paso de los Gitanos, the Easer Procession of the Gypsies.
“The little river still gurgled in its channel between the road and the cliffs below the Alhambra, but two of the old mansions of the left had become hotels.” The bus turns up Paseo de los Tristes.
They tell Paco that this is no place to live alone but he knows he wouldn’t move.
The gypsy part of the city where Max lives – at Cuesta de María de la Miel, 27. When he opens his window and stands on his balcony, he amazes himself with the view everyday so when he gets a letter saying he might have to move, he is devastated.
Max drives and explores the city in some depth but it;s the journey on Palm sunday when he drives along the right corner of Calle Isabel la Real, around the corner of Cuesta de la lona and passes the Moorish Gate of Puerta de Monaita which overlooks the city that you really get another unique view of the city and its beauty.
