2000s: Crime fiction drama set in London with a Polish twist
Janusz Kiszka is the big-hearted ‘fixer’ to London’s Poles. His private life is going quite well as last as his girlfriend is finally leaving her awful husband.
But before she can do this, she goes missing. Kiszka is convinced there’s been some kind of fowl play so he seeks the help, rather reluctantly it has to be said, of an old contact Natalie Kershaw, who’s been suspended following a fatal shooting.
The search is now underway but there is a worrying realisation that Kasia’s disappearance and a string of brutal East End murders could in fact be connected
Janusz is a unique character in crime fiction and indeed he would be in real life as well. He’s an influential man in his Polish community and lies to help out if and when he can. He sees and hears everything. He connects all the Polish people in London living in the various clusters and knows the man you need for the job. This man has influence.
So, when crimes and other things happen and Polish nationals are involved, this man’s insider is invaluable. The Polish community in London, their interaction with the rest of the city, their daily concerns and worries, how they settle in. All of this and the nuances of Polish culture are evoked and explored.
Fascinating and unique
