1942: A small Swiss village turns vigilant during the war
Europe is in flames, but the people of Payerne, Swtizerland, are more concerned with unemployment and local bankruptcy than the fate of nations across the border. Until, that is, a handful of local Nazis lure Arthur Bloch – a Jewish cattle merchant – into a stable and kill him with an iron bar. Based on a true story of political murder in 1940s Switzerland, Chessex’ novel is a riveting read.
Payernne
A small town in Switzerland and at the time of war, this is a village, rural and remote.
A castle was built in 1640 on the grounds of the monastery as a residence for the Bernese representative. From the early 19th until the late 20th Century, it housed the high school. In the 1830s and 40s the city walls and three gates were demolished, only the four towers still remain. The former monastery town spread out in all directions, and grew gradually to meet the town of Corcelles.
