2000s: A portrait of a Balinese family
William Ingram shares a series of intimate moments that together sketch an illuminating portrait of a Balinese family.
He explores the web of relationships that ties the members of the family to one another, their community and their ancestors. At the same time he candidly discloses a personal cross-cultural journey.
The author mentions in his author note that he wanted to respect the privacy of the people and villages he writes about in the book so many places are vague. The journey starts in Ubud in a family unit, a family compound.
“Sitting on the porch’s edge, I watched the changing colours. The sun was low in the eastern sky and its light gilded the tops of the coconut trees.”
“In the distance from the community hall near the lotus pond, the village’s wooden bell was sounding. slowly at first, then faster and faster. The bell was the heartbeat of the community. Its music called the people of North Ubud to the social or religious duties of the day.”
