2000s: How do you see the world from your solitary existence?
Job Sanstrum lives in Godsfinger, Alberta. He’s an outsider – for he sees sound in colour; the resonant ring of a wet finger run around a wine glass generates hues of merging pastel colours like the shifting gloss of northern lights that grace the sky of his home town.
When his bullying pastor brother, Jacob, returns with his wife and troubled son to claim the family farmhouse, Job is forced out of his home into further solitude.
When his ability to see sound begins to fade and his one comfort is lost, Job realises he must look beyond himself and his solitary existence to find happiness and acceptance.
“In the rough-and-tumble farming community of Godsfinger, Alberta, he lives a solitary existence, raising cattle and farming the land, like his father and grandfather before him. Yet the surrounding pasture do not old much attraction for him. Instead he prefers his humble farmhouse kitchen, where cooking and baking, and even washing dishes, give him deep satisfaction.”
This is a retelling of the biblical story of Job – but transported to Alberta farm country. Job Sunstrum experiences a deep psychic connection to his landscape. He might be a shy and unassuming type but his gift of synesthesia, where he can see and even feel sound, makes him stand out in his community for all kinds of reasons. He wants to be accepted by the people in his community but feels more akin to the landscape around him – with the sights, sounds and colours that this evokes for him
