1990s- Donna Leon takes us to the island of Pellestrina in the Venetian lagoon where two fisherman have been found dead
The murder of two clam fishermen off the island of Pellestrina, south of the Lido on the Venetian lagoon, draws Commissario Brunetti to the island.
But this is no ordinary island since it is so tightly bound by a code of loyalty and suspicion of outsiders that Brunetti is going to have his work cut out by trying to find out what exactly went on there.
The boss’ secretary Signorina Elettra volunteers to visit the island, and she says she might be able to get somewhere since she has relatives there.
Brunetti finds himself torn between his duty to solve the murders, concerns for Elettra’s safety, and his not entirely straightforward feelings for her ..
The Venetian Lagoon is a mystery place for it seems to be full of small island communities totally cut off from the rest of the world and of their way of thinking.
Pellestrina is a long narrow peninsula of sand tat has, over the course of the centuries been turned into habitable ground. Running North and south from San Pietro in Volta to Ca’ Roman, Pellestrina is about ten kilometers long but never ore than a couple of hundred metres wide.
They don’t much care for the Venice Police so when Brunetti turns up and tries to find out why two fisherman died, he doesn’t get very far. Murdered with their boat set alight – yet no one seems to want to know.
The island of Pellestrina is one of these islands and is a closed and secretive little place where an outsider is not welcome and suspicion is their best weapon.
The island politics and special position in Italy is examined when the police office’s administrator, the boss’ daughter – is allowed to be part of the investigation by going to the island to help. Having grown up there she knows the people, the habits culture and the way of doing things. These lagoon islands are very unique.
Elettra is of course excited about what she is getting involved with and returning home in this way to help her colleagues. But Brunetti is concerned and well he might be. Is she getting in too deep and more importantly is he?
