1958: A walk to remember, a book to remember and keep…
It is 1958 and seventeen-year-old Landon is revelling in his youth: dating girls and even claiming to have been in love. He is a world apart from shy, reclusive Jamie Sullivan, a Baptist’s daughter who carries a bible with her school books, cares for her widowed father and volunteers at the orphanage. But fate will intervene.
Forced to partner up at the school dance, Landon and Jamie embark on a journey of earth-shattering love and agonising loss far beyond their years. In the months that follow, Landon discovers the true depths of the human heart, and takes a decision that is so stunning it will lead him irrevocably down the road to manhood .
The book is set in Beaufort:
“Beaufort North Carolina, which is located on the coast near Morehead City, was a place like many other small southern towns
For many of the people there, fishing in the Pamlico Sound or crabbing in the Neuse River was a way of life
Television was never important to those of us who grew up there. Instead our lives were centred around the churches, of which there were eighteen within the town limits alone”
The movie version of the story was filmed in Wilmington. There’s a real Film Trail to do here when you’ve finished the booktrail!
Orton Plantation – The wedding scene was filmed at Luola’s Chapel on the Orton Plantation.
Jamie Sullivan’s House – 1716 Chestnut St
Trinity United Methodist Church – The church in the movie 1403 Market St
