According to Ben, Maddy makes a lot of mistakes in their marriage which makes him lash out at her. He’s only trying to make her see sense.
However things take a turn for the worse, when Maddy’s latest mistake is to allow for her car to break down for that meant that he has to go and pick her up. He decides to teach her another lesson.
The resulting car crash teaches them all valuable lessons that they will take a long time to learn but it is these lessons and Maddy’s journey through the horrific landscape of her recovery that is the hardest lesson to learn. How life is now and how life was… two very different worlds.
Set in Boston, the landscape here is secondary to the novel and main story for this is story which could happen anywhere to anyone and that has to be the most important to take away with you.
The recovery from a head injury is hard to read as you might imagine and the thought that a jealous, angry husband has let his rage get out of control is the most shocking thought of all. Domestic abuse comes in so many forms and this is a hard account to read since it is so vivid and so plausible in every way.
From bustling Centre street in Downtown Boston where al the shops and activity seem to be, we are taken to Jamaica Plain where the family of the story live in an affluent area. A clear message that domestic abuse and injury do not discriminate via postcodes or salary bracket.
Jamaica Plain is the scene of the accident. An area of such beauty yet utter destruction is contrasted well and it is here that Maddy’s journey of recovery starts.
Her life she once had and the life she has now are two very separate things and her thoughts and emotions are raw and poignant. A journey of recovery and ultimately of hope.
