2000s: You need to know who your husband really was…
When Paula Gadd’s husband of almost thirty years dies, just days away from the seventh anniversary of their son, Christopher’s death, her world falls apart. Grieving and bereft, she is stunned when a young woman approaches her at the funeral service, and slips something into her pocket. A note suggesting that Paula’s husband was not all that he seemed…
When the two women eventually meet, a series of revelations challenges everything Paula thought they knew, and it becomes immediately clear that both women’s lives are in very real danger
The novel is set largely in and around Glasgow although it’s a city backdrop rather than a character. The city is one of two halves – it involves issues such as poverty, drugs and homelessness and showcases the difference between the haves and the have nots. It’s a compelling slice of social history highlighting all kinds of injustices involving (financial) security and greed of money
The settings do support the plot very well however particularly towards the end, describing a part of Scotland that would well worth a visit if only to see where this book reaches its peak.
The accent of Glasgow is hard to understand for some – luckily this is not written in dialect although there are some words and phrases sprinkled through the text but they enhance rather than change or affect the plot. They spice it up! A Scotland novel needs some language to place it after all.
