2000s: Sailing with strangers on the high seas. What could possibly go wrong?
Rob and Anna have only just met Owen and Kim. Now they’ve boarded their handsome old boat to travel to a far off island in the Caribbean.
With only the four of them on board, it should be paradise: lazy afternoons spent snorkelling; long nights enjoying the silence and solitude of the sea.
But ten days is a long time to spend with strangers. Especially when one of them carries a secret.
The largest of Honduras’ Bay Islands, in the Caribbean is not a very large island at all – just some 77 km long and approximately 8 km wide, but it’s in the middle of the ocean and so remote as it can be. This is an island fit for exploring and for getting lost on and for ships to get shipwrecked on. There are coves, rocks, mangroves and a tropical landscape that is delightful as it is a little bit too far from cilivisation for some.
It’s all a bit Huckleberry Finn to be honest – decide on the spur of the moment with people you’ve only just met to go off on an adventure of a lifetime. The boat they take is hardly at the top end of boats either – it’s little more than cardboard it would seem. Will it ever get them from Belize City to Roatán? This is the journey planned but whilst they might have a plan where they are going to, they have no idea about who is on the boat with them. Some journey to paradise or one from hell?
There’s plenty of time to discover all about each other on the open seas – in fact there’s little else to do so it’s that or nothing. There’s not much space and even less privacy and the boat is sailing into unchartered waters in more ways than one. The boat and life on it is cramped and claustrophobic. The view from the boat is something else and at first the sight of land, the sight of paradise keeps them going. But stormy waters are going to scupper this journey. Sailing life may not be for you after this.
