Celia Kilbride, a gems and jewellery expert, hopes to escape from public attention and a failed engagement by lecturing on a brand-new cruise ship, the Queen Charlotte.
On board she meets eighty-six-year-old Lady Emily Haywood – the owner of a priceless emerald necklace that she intends to leave to a museum after the cruise.
But three days out to sea Lady Emily is found dead
The necklace missing.
And the suspect is obviously on board..
The passengers all board at New York and the first stop is set to be Southampton where some of the guests will disembark. However, the journey to that point, as the ship moves steadily across the Atlantic is not in for a smooth journey. The winds turn into a storm and the ship starts to rock slightly. Someone could be at risk of falling overboard perhaps. There’s some dubious figures on board…..then one of them is found dead …
This is a cruise seemingly from yesteryear as the ship is often referred to as being another Titanic – well at least in style and opulence and not the fate of the liner you would hope. Passengers wander along the deck, dress for dinner, dine with the captain and wear opulent jewels on board. Oh this is the life!
There’s an incident which is very reminiscent of a Roald Dahl story and a few characters which could have been staying in Fawlty Towers at some point. There are hushed talks in the corridors, hidden signals at the buffet, and a lot of funny goings on in various cabins
The destination here is certainly not the fun of the journey!
