Ernesto Vera is walking home from his job at a taco truck on night when three men jump from a car and attack him. He’s been targeted as his sister is involved with a gang and that to get at her, they are going to kill him.
When Payasa, Ernesto’s sister finds out that her brother has been murdered, she vows revenge. The death of one man, one innocent man then starts a war which affects the whole community, many more innocents and leads to one of the most racially charged trials in US history
This is an account of a true life and utterly terrifying situation which happened in Los Angeles and which showed the world what kind of gang violence and gang warfare really existed in that part of the world.
Following the trial (the real life trial of the policemen accused of killing Rodney King), the city of Los Angeles quite literally exploded into chaos, violence and brutality. This novel tells that story through the eyes of seventeen different people over the course of six days.
What they see, what they do, how they react is a powerful and dramatic account – you can feel the sweat and fear dripping from the pages, the violence is shocking and visceral. The various view points given produce a vivid and interconnected account of what happened that day, how, when and why.
The violence is horrific, the reasons and consequences of gang violence hard to understand but how quickly it escalates! Truly shocking

There’s parts of Ryan’s novel where you feel like you’re in the middle of the riots for that whole book. Every shot and every punch feels like it’s directed right in your gut.
