It’s 1950 and the Liverpool rep theatre company is rehearsing its Christmas production of Peter Pan, a story of childhood innocence and loss. Stella has been taken on as assistant stage manager and quickly becomes obsessed the director. But there is an understudy waiting in the wings, and he causes an altogether different drama to unfold.
Roll up, roll up for the trials and tribulations of a small but colourful travelling music hall company with so many moments of comedy and tragedy you’d think it was an homage to Shakespeare.
Stella Bradshaw is an aspiring young actress making her first hesitant steps onto the stage. The Glitz and the glamour of the theatre is there for all to see and through the eyes of a young girl who is taking her first steps onto the stage and then falling in love with it, this is a new and exciting world.
From her first part, she gains a second and more important role. The characters on the stage are evoked in clear detail:
“He was a sadist in a trilby hat worn with the brim turned up all the way round like a vaudeville comic.”
