2000s: Sail to An island in Greece, Skopelos, “the gates of the wind”
The island of the Sporades are quite something with their sparkling waters and their lush green foliage. The fisherman who pass here call them the gates of thee wind for the feeling they get and the gush of wind they feel as they pass by.
It’s a unique part of the world and so Michael Carroll ends up here when he decides to go sailing to wherever the wind takes him. Taking his boat Astarte, a boat of sleek mahogany with wine-red sails, named after the Phoenician goddess of the moon and the sea, his adventures begin
But then he lands on Skopelos and the real adventure begins
Skopelos really is a magical part of the world. No wonder Michael Carroll wishes to sail here and why when he arrived, did he do his best to settle here as he becomes increasingly attached to the islands.
This is a story of sun- drenched adventures of a man getting used to a land dictated to by the weather and the seasons, moving to wherever the wind takes him and feeling just as free. He settles in a remote cove which was once the site of an ancient city. Everything has history here.
The Northern Sporades are the islands where Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonissos are located. Lately, Skopelos has been called the “Mama Mia island” for obvious reasons.
The book was published in 1965 so a lot has changed since then but then a lot has stayed the same. This is the land of Greece and the boats which bob up and down in its waters. An island in the middle of nowhere where Charcoal burning and olive growing and pressing is still a part of life.
You will never forget how to spear an octopus either
