Anne gets the job of principal at Summerside High School, and in true Anne-style makes it her very own…
Now a young woman and her romance with Gilbert Blythe beginning to flourish, Anne Shirley becomes Principal of Summerside High School. But Summerside is virtually ruled by the Pringle family, who don’t want Anne at the school. It takes all of Anne’s courage and tact, and the comfort she draws from the eccentric household at Windy Willows, to overcome local prejudice and confront the dreaded Pringles.
The beauty of Anne of Green Gables country is that it looks exactly as you imagine it would when reading the novels.
Despite the story of Anne being centered here in this novel, the real essence of the novel is firmly routed in PEI as this is where she returns to during her holidays and breaks and is of course where her heart still lies with Gilbert and with her home of Green Gables.
Summerside is quite different from PEI in that there is a new social hierarchy with the Pringles and her work at the school is very demanding. Her letters to and from Gilbert are what keep her going.
Everything is remarkably close by and the spirit of Anne is embedded in the island itself from the soil to the lake of Shining waters and the cherry blossom trees. Sadly the horse and carts have been replaced by cars but they do still exist for the tourists.
The Lucy Maud Montgomery home is one quarter mile East of Green Gables and is decorated to look like the house as it would have been like in Anne’s day, with her room and the white picket fence exactly as she left it.
Lucy Maud Montgomery birthplace. No visit to the island would be complete without visiting the house of the lady who brought Anne into the world.
