You make a snap decision. You turn. You push. Your pursuer tumbles down the steps. He lies motionless, face-down on the floor.
Now What?
“I set off towards the canal, crossing the bridge. It’s wrong iron, blue. It reminds me of the playground at school. My fingers trail over the bars. It’s ghostly out there. There’s nobody around. The rain gets slightly heavier and a wind chills me.
I turn left down a side alley I would never usually go down. Just to see what he does”
A man is following you, you hear his steps mimicking yours. you head down a side alley, close to the canal. He gains on your. Do you stop or fight or flee?
Location is not important here although the book is clearly set in Birmingham, the canals playing a large part in the story and it’s also where the author lives. But the frightening thing is that it could be in any city anywhere…
“Birmingham is leafy Run down in places. Upmarket in others, it is nothing – absolutely nothing like London. Real London. Reuben’s London, with its ancient corner pubs. The cobbled streets. The blue Bloomsbury signs on buildings.”
